Moistening the head of the cigar

Before trying any technique you may want to know about the cigar, that the wrapper leaf is very delicate. It can easily get torn when cutting, to be sure that it won’t cut off you just need to moisten it a little bit. As they say, Precaution is better than cure. You can simply moisten it by placing the head of the cigar in your mouth. There is no need to lick the cigar to moisten it as the mouth. When it is close creates humidity in our mouth and that is perfectly okay for the cigar.

After all, cutting a humid moistened cap is far easier than cutting a dry cigar. By using this means the risks of tearing up of cigar reduces to zero.

Furthermore, when the head of the cigar is in your mouth you will be able to taste the initial flavor and can smell the freshness of the cigar which is often very pleasant.

Here is a simple and basic guide to know about the cutting of cigars and all the techniques you may want to know about.

Various Techniques to cut a cigar are as follows:

  1. Double Guillotine Cutter
  2. Punch cut with punches
  3. Wedge cut with V-Cutters
  4. Biting
  5. Emergency DIY Cigar Cutting

1-One way to cut a cigar is with a Double Guillotine Cutter

cutting a cigar with a Double Guillotine Cutter

First, select the correct end of the cigar to cut which goes in the mouth.

The end of the cigar that goes in the mouth for smoking is known as the head of a cigar and the other end which you ignite is known as the foot and except for these parts, it is being called the body. You can find the head of the cigar where you see a cap and brand name or logo around it.

Second, Locate the “shoulder” of the cigar.

The shoulder is to be cut to smoke a cigar so it is the last end of the cigar where the cigar is still intact but the straightness of the cigar ends.

Third, you must have a cigar cutter.

Pick up your cigar cutter in your dominant hand and place it between thumb and forefinger.

Fourth, place the cigar into the cutter and line it up correctly.

Line up the cigar in the cutter with precision like check it by closing one eye and finding the right spot to cut it properly. Remember that, you must cut a little than cutting too much because you cannot join an already cut cigar so it’s better to cut small with precision than cutting too much and feeling sorry for it. As they all say, It is better to be safe than sorry.

Fifth and last is to cut the cigar in one quick fluid motion with as much strength as you can.

You can find the proper images to know how to cut a cigar properly by the double guillotine cutter method here.

2-The second way to cut a cigar is with a punch cut with punches

cutting a cigar with a punch cut with punches

First, you need to purchase a cigar punch. There are three kinds of cigar punches available in the market.

  • Bullet punches: They can fit on a key chain, it has a circular blade that can cut into the head of the cigar.
  • Havana punch: It can fit into the cigar head that draws out the tobacco plug after the cut is made and is safer than a bullet punch.
  • Multi-punch: It offers more sizes for different sizes of cigars.

3-The third method to cut a cigar is by wedge cut with v-cutters.

V Cutters use by people who mostly like to smoke with a bigger draw from cigar which makes the cigar smoke too hot.

4-Bitting is another method to cut a cigar

We are mentioning this technique at the last just as a formality. By trying this method you may end up filling your mouth with tobacco salad. Do not try this method unless you have very sharp teeth like a Dracula and its healing power in case you try it and get hurt and find yourself an appointment with the dentist.

Biting a cigar to cut for smoke may result in poor smoke and is imprecise in case of other methods. I will suggest if you have a choice of a straight punch, wedge cut than choose these instead of biting the cap off.

Try biting the cigar, place the head of the cigar in your teeth where it’s not straight and is round. Gently rotate the cigar while rotating the cigar to cut it. After a bit, a few times while rotating the cigar the cap will be separate and can remove by hand or mouth.

5-Emergency DIY Cigar Cuttings

Sometimes you can find yourself in a place without any tools at hand. You can always wait to smoke the cigar later but maybe you want to smoke at the moment but you don’t have any tools at the spot. So to cover these things we have a few methods of cutting a cigar that can help you in those spots.

  • Pocket Knifes
  • Razor Blade
  • Match Stick
  • Finger Nails

1-Cutting a cigar with a pocket knife:

If you are someone who carries a pocket knife or has a pocket knife at the place where you are so it would be your best choice. The knife must be sharp and not too thick. A dull blade is always ineffective at cutting anything other than a cigar which can end tearing up the cigar too much than you want. You have to check the knives before using it on a cigar that it must not be rusty, dull, or chunky.

A good knife like a steel blade (surgically sharp ones) can use to cut the head of the cigar like a double guillotine cutter just try to think how and where to place the knife and put some strength in it and pull off the trick. Try to be precise on placing the knife not too far or not to close the end so you can enjoy its taste.

2-Cutting a Cigar with a Razor Blade

Razors are very sharp objects with very thin edges. Using straight razors could be a logical choice other than double-edge safety razors because there is no room to apply pressure on it to cut a cigar without getting injure or chopping off your fingers instead of a cigar. If you are a Pro / Expert who can manipulate razor as you wish then and only then you can make a clean cut for your cigar and can enjoy the very richness of it.

Unless you are a Peaky Blinder, people do not carry their razors with them at all times. Although razors are indeed effective in cutting things they are not always a proper or likely solution for some jobs. With all that said, if you are at someplace where you do not have any cutting material at hand like you are at your friend’s home or any place elsewhere you cannot find a cutter at hand than maybe you can find a safety razor or wet shaver nearby.

3-Punching a Cigar with a Matchstick

We have seen some people swear that matchsticks can be used for punching a hole in a cigar. By using the wooden end of the matchstick, you simply need to apply pressure on the end of the cigar and twist the matchstick into it to create an opening of the size of the wooden matchstick. There are many types of wooden matchsticks but they all can do magic.

The same method/concept can also be used with a screw-like cutter, nail, pens, and even forks or anything else that is pointed.

However, the pinhole in the cigar create by applying these methods mention above is very small, and the opening is far too narrow for comfort, which ends up creating a very tight draw. A small pinhole in the cigar could end burning the tar and nicotine in the cigar too quickly than usual which creates a very bitter flavor.

4-Peeling a cigar cap with a fingernail

A long time ago when the cutting devices were not that common to use for cigars people have reported that they used their fingernails to peel off the cap of the cigars without even hurting themselves. Even if you have short fingernails you can do it. You just need to do a little practice on a cigar first which would take more than 10 minutes at most.

Use the tips of your fingernails or corners you just need to press at any side of the cap and apply force so it can enter into the cigar cap then gently rotate the cigar in opposite direction. After a lot of revolutions, you should be able to peel off the cap and can pull away from the cap without even damaging the wrapper or cigar. If you are careful while doing this, you will be able to smoke the cigar.

HUMI-SMART 2-Way Humidity Control

Except for all these options for cutting a cigar, there are some other methods which can come in handy that is why we are suggesting them here.

  1. Scissors and desk-top devices can also use to cut the end of a cigar in any way you want, like V shape cut or a round cut. It is your choice.
  2. The Shuriken Cutter, it resembles a giant capsule with six sharp blades which introduce back in 2011 for cutting short filter cigar bands. It simply cuts slits around the cap of the cigar ( We don’t recommend )
  3. Slicing around the cap of the cigar with any sharp object like knife, blade, or anything else.
  4. Making a cross cut on the head of the cigar with any object, you can light your cigar with two cross cuts or more that is up to you.
  5. You can also use screwdrivers to make a hole or peel off the head, you just need to come up with a creative idea and do it.
  6. When you’re going golfing, there is always a golf tee that you can use to punch cut into the head of the cigar.
  7. If you are fishing and in a boat, you can use a fishhook to make a hole or to make some crosses on it, it is up to you.
