Glock 17 Gen 4
Like in every other market, there is competition between different companies that produce ammunition. Undoubtedly, most of the time the difference between two products of two different companies is only subtle.
However, the key to making your products widely popular is to market them properly. When talking about guns, the name Glock is not new.
Despite having a lot of competition, Glock’s have made their way into the hands of a majority of law enforcement and military groups. This is a consequence of great planning.
It is human psychology to trust products that are more commonly seen as they are an assurance of the reliability of the product.
Glock is the single most popular manufacturer of handguns in the United States. This handgun introduced the style which has come to be known as the Glockhaus.
An Overview
Glock 17 Gen 4 is a simple, extremely well-made gun with various features. It is surely a step up from its predecessors, Gen 2 and Gen 3.
However, with the premium range price of the Glock, you would expect some more fancy features that will be unlike the ones found in other, cheaper handguns.
The Glock 17 Gen 4 is a full-size, striker-fired handgun. It has a polymer-made body and it can easily be used for daily carry.
Not only is it ideal for home safety, but it is also an excellent choice for duty and combat.
They are considered easily usable and reliable in emergency cases, with a great feel and balance to them which makes it a better choice.
However, using a Glock for target competitions is unwise and silly considering its key purpose is safety, not accuracy.
In terms of appearance, Glock is surely not getting any awards for designs. On first look, it looks straight up ugly with its rectangular, boxy design. Nonetheless, for most, simplicity translates to greater reliability.
Specifications
The pistol is 7.95 inches long and has a height of 5.43 inches. The link between the sides is 6.49 inches, with a barrel of 4.48 inches.
Unloaded, the full-sized handgun weighs only 25.06 ounces. After loading, it weighs 32.12 ounces. It has a trigger pull of 5.5 pounds, and the trigger travel is somewhat below half an inch.
Furthermore, its barrel rifling is unconventional. It is a right-hand hexagonal twist. It has a capacity for 17 rounds.
The pistol is very comfortable, with low recoil and a better grip. However, there is a lower bore-axis. Unlike other guns, Glock does not have Picatinny or Weaver rails, instead, it has a “Glock Universal Rail”.
Moreover, an undesirable feature of the Glock 17 is its trigger safety which is considerably more uncomfortable.
However, there is secondary safety on the underside of this handgun, but it can only be operated by using fingernails. Moreover, the markings are invisible as they are melded with the safety’s silver color.
Internals
It is considerably easier to separate the Glock 17 into its 4 main parts: barrel, slide, grip, and action spring.
The multi-piece nested spring assembly used in Gen 4 Glock 17 claims to reduce recoil and enhance service life.
Sights
The sights are open and fixed with no adjustments at all. They have white markings that make working with the gun easier in dim lighting.
Most of the Glock’s feature plastic sights which are comparatively a let-down in comparison to the steel sights featured by most other manufacturers.
The Glock’s rear sights have a flat front, giving it a good lever for one-hand shelving on belts or equipment.
For reasons we don’t understand, this functionality is becoming less and less common as other markings move towards the rear aiming ramp.
Magazine
Glock 17 Gen 4 has a more realistic, metal-reinforced plastic magazine. Its releases from the release button provided on the side of the grip. It has a good shape, and markings that make using it easier.
However, the magazine isn’t spring-loaded. Therefore, it can either angle in a position that makes it drop out or, you can physically pull it out.
The seventeen round markings see on the magazine’s rear.
Each Glock 17 Gen 4 comes with three magazines. This is a very attractive package and saves users from having to buy separate magazines.
The CO2 insert in the underside of the magazine, which can do by unscrewing the retaining plate with the gives hex key.
Grip
The Glock’s grip in its slimmest configuration, consider like the size small when it is unboxed. This configuration, however, does not come with any beaver-tail option.
Moreover, this comes with an array of options for different hand sizes in the form of back-straps.
There is a total of four back-straps, two for size Medium (M), and two for size Large (L). One of each size is a variant with a standard beaver-tail, and the other is a back-strap with an extended beaver-tail.
Along with the extended beaver-tail back-strap, the trigger guard undercut of the Glock further supports shooters that prefer a higher hand-hold.
The stippling on the grip of the gun makes it easy for handling. It gives the shooter a better grip even if their hands get sweaty and avoids any slipperiness.
Features To Consider
Even though the Glock 17 Gen 4 does not make for accuracy, it is an excellent choice for home defense, daily carriage, and youth competitions. This is because it has a longer barrel that gives higher velocity and longer sight radius for long shots.
Moreover, to help with the accuracy, lasers can be fit in to aid with the target for those who think its sights are inconvenient.
Furthermore, Glock 17 is a great choice for new shooters because of its softer recoil, better grip, and its easy maintenance.
Glock 17 is also more durable and reliable, even when it has dirt and grit. It has been shown to maintain its aim and faces no battery failures.
Final Thoughts
Considering the easy, light feel of the solid and sturdy gun, and the perfect balance it has, the few shortcomings can be ignored and it is safe to say, Glock 17 Gen 4 is an excellent handgun for daily use, and safety purposes.
[…] Optional pistol grip […]
Not sure why you would mention the CO2 canister in the magazine when that is only a feature of blowback air pistols… also there is no physical safety on the bottom of a Glock actuated by fingernail. Unless there is some safety on air pistols, which again is irrelevant when talking about the real firearm Glock 17.
