How to setup a Humidor
Your long and exhausted working day on the job is finally finished, you are traveling back to home, entering your house and it is time to rest. You are sitting on your favorite couch, turning on the TV and lighting up the cigar, but hey, something is wrong about it, the taste of your cigar has changed because of influence of humidity and temperature in your room. Then you are starting to think “If only I had a place to store my cigars to prevent this from happening”, and don’t worry, there is simple solution for that and it is called-Humidor.
Before we get into how to setup a humidor, let’s first get to know something about it, learn something about history of humidors, how it works, find out what are the different types of it and other.
What is Humidor?
Humidor is humidity-controlled box that can be of different sizes and shapes and it is designed and primarily used for storing cigars, cannabis, coffee, tea and pipe tobacco.
Main function of humidor is to maintain desirable moisture level inside it and keep cigars moist. It also protects its content from damage and spoiling from sunlight.
Without Humidor cigars will quickly lose moisture level and general humidity around them will level up which will lead to cigars losing their quality, flavor and aroma. They will also burn too hot which will make them hard to smoke properly.
The ideal humidity level in Humidor is around 68%-72% and if that percentage get bigger it will result in extremely high humidity and it can only lead in content inside it getting rotten and decayed.
History of Humidor
Humidity level in humidors is measured with device known as hygrometer. The first hygrometer is designed by Italian architect, constructor and engineer Leonardo Da Vinci in the 1400s. Later in 1783 the Swiss physicist and geologist Bénédict de Saussure upgraded the device with human hair making it more perfect and accurate.
The first tobacco curing barns were built with Spanish cedar (nowadays it is a common and one of the best choices for constructing humidor interior.) which was very common in Central America where tobacco is grown.
Before the cigars became popular, Europeans had mostly smoked tobacco in pipes. Yet in the 19th century tobacco pipes has slowly started to be replaced by cigars.
The Irish furniture maker Terence Manning brought home exotic woods materials and cabinetry techniques from South Africa in 1887 and use them to build the first Humidor. His family became famous because of their humidors constructing and their techniques spread through whole Europe and America.
Later the English, French and Dutch ceramic companies named Royal Doulton, Royal Delft and Royal Limoges put on the market first earthenware, stoneware and porcelain humidors.

How Humidor works?
Okay, we are close to the end of our story, so after all of this information you are probably thinking “Okay, this seems interesting but how Humidor actually works?” and here is the answer.
At first the Humidor is not only supposed to store your cigars but instead it has a few components that create ideal conditions in it. Whose making humidor a perfect place for your cigars to be stored in.
These conditions are including controlled temperature and determined humidity inside the box. Which maintain the right amount of moisture inside to help preventing your cigars from getting too wet or too dried. Because if that happens it will result in losing or changing taste of your cigar or other problems and you probably don’t want to that happened.
Keeping your cigars in such a place will keep the great taste of your cigar. There are two components that are responsible for maintaining a perfect level of humidity in the box and they are Spanish cedar and Humidifier.
Spanish cedar
Spanish cedar is the most common material that is used for making humidors.
It is used most often because of its ability to absorb and release moisture slowly which makes humidity level balanced as possible.
In case there is more moisture outside the wood it will absorb it to try to reach the balance. So before storing cigars in it you will need to prepare your humidor by moisturizing the cedar. Or the cedar will pull out moisture from cigars and purpose of humidor will be destroyed.
Humidifier
The real thing that keeps balanced level of humidity and moisture inside the box is humidifier.
Once u have stored your cigars in humidor humidifier will constantly providing moisture inside the box which allows the cigars to stay on right level of humidity and cedar to absorb moisture and release it in case it overflows the box.
There are many types of humidifiers on market with different abilities like florist foam based blocks that absorb distilled water or gel based humidifiers.
Whichever version of humidifier you like most make sure that you have carefully read the instructions and follow them in order to know when to fill humidifier with more distilled water or other moisturizing products.
Hygrometer
We have already talked about the hygrometer. When it was constructed first, who constructed it and other(check the History part if u want to read that again) . But now let’s talk more about it purpose, concretely how to observe your Humidor with it.
Hygrometer is also key part of the Humidor which use to measure humidity level inside humidor. Which will allow you to know when u need to recharge humidifier and keep the balance with humidity inside.
For example if u want to humidity stay between ideal percentage of 68%-72% and temperature about 70 degrees Fahrenheit. You can use hygrometer to easily observe it and check if percentage of humidity or temperature change and adjust it according to your wishes.
Make sure to check hygrometer once a week to get know if the humidity is staying on right level. Also don’t forget to adjust your hygrometer in order to keep the readings on percentage that you want.
How to setup Humidor?
And finally we have come to the last part of the puzzle. Before we start with it go through entire story once again, make sure that u have learned everything about Humidor and its purpose and come back here after that.
So let we say that you have decided to get your first humidor. First make sure that your budget is big enough so you can get yourself an ideal humidor that will serve you well.
Second you need to choose a type of Humidor that is best for you.
We have showed different types of humidor earlier in this article, so check it and choose one that u like the most.
So we are going to get through entire process slowly, step by step and you will learn everything that you need to know about setting up the humidor.
So let’s start with setup process. At first check up the dimensions of it and make sure that u have properly space to place it.
What components you will need to setup it:
1) Humidifier
2) Hygrometer
3) Hygrometer calibration kit
4) Gallon of distilled water
6) New and unused kitchen sponge
7) A glass dish
8) Dish towel
After you get all this stuff, it will take some time to set up it. It is usually about 4 days but it can last longer in case of different size. And the shape of humidor or materials that will be needed.
So the 1st step is to adjust your Hygrometer.
The hygrometer is very important when it comes to observing the level of humidity. Because it will allow you to adjust it to ideal percentage so your humidor can perform well.
You can search online for how to adjust it, it’s very simple process but it will take few hours.
After you finish that, you can proceed to the next step.
The 2nd step is to fill your Humidifier.
Remove your humidifier from the box, take it and place it in a dish. Fill the Humidifier with propylene glycol solution. You can either squirt it into humidifier with foam humidification unit. Or you can just sink it into dish with propylene glycol solution.
If you run out of propylene glycol solution you can use distilled water. And remember to never use tap water because it can create mold in your humidor and cigars.
Both propylene glycol solution and distilled water can be used but it is recommend to use. Propylene glycol solution because of its ability to prevents over-humidifying of humidor.
Once humidifier is full, make sure that solution doesn’t overflow the humidifier, take it and place it back into Humidor.
The 3rd step is to humidify the interior of the Humidor.
After you finished with filling the Humidor you will probably want to speed up the whole process. And humidify the interior as fastest you can. But the best way is to reach the ideal humidity level through few days.
So take your kitchen sponge and sink it in distilled water(but not too much, only to get a good amount of moisture). After that take a plastic bag and place it into the humidor.
Then take the sponge and put it over the plastic bag(a plastic bag will prevent the sponge from having full contact with interior). Then close the lid on your humidor and leave it closed. For about 3-5 days to make sure that the interior will be properly humidified. After the few days have passed, you will need your calibrated hygrometer to measure the humidity.
The 4rd step is to measure the Humidity.
As we have already said, you will need Hygrometer for that.
The percentage of humidity needs to be about 75%-80%. Which is a little more than the ideal percentage of 68%-72%. But once u have stored cigars in, they will pull out a lot of excess moisture.
The 5th step is to fill the Humidor with cigars.
Once humidity has reached between 75% and 80%, u can fill the box with cigars. It recommended to not overfill the box with cigars, instead of off leave about 20% of free space. So, the Air and Humidity can easily move inside and access all the cigars that you have stored.
And finally the last step is to maintain the Humidor.
Maintenance is an important part to know once you have set up the humidor. You will need to keep the humidity level between 68% and 72%. And if it falls to about 60% you will need to fill humidifier with distilled water or propylene glycol solution.
Also, you will need to rotate the position of your cigars in the box. Because it does not recommend to always the same cigars lay near the source of humidification. It will be great to do this at least once a week.
And that is it! We have gone through the entire process of Humidor setup. We hope that this article helps you to learn everything that you needed to know about Humidor. And its setup and everything that u need to do now is to light up your cigarette, and enjoy the rest of the day!
