Springfield M1A Review: History, Specs, and Instructions

Back in the days, no one believed that the Springfield M1A would be remarkable rifle even until now.

Since the late 1950s, the semi-automatic civilian variant of the Springfield M1A rifle is in continuous use.

The Springfield M1A is a lovely rifle, not to mention its high precision, durability, and practicality.

It has many modern uses. Not only for police and military purposes but also for civilians. And its history, as well as that of the M14, is also rich.

It is not fair since the AR-15 is probably due to the sheer volume of higher sales, the M1A’s ‘American Rifle.’

The Springfield M1A History

The Springfield M1A is just the civil version of the M14 iconic, and the M14 itself is essentially a small-scale Garand. The niche for a fully automated combat rifle was developing after WW2.

Countries that created the Organization of the North Atlantic Treaty soon concluded that small arms cartons were standard; there was a disagreement about the exact cart.

The UK concentrated on a smaller. Out of consideration with full auto controllability, 280 cartridges.

The US declined to follow anything less than the standard 30 and raised questions about decreased stopping capacity.

In Vietnam, the rifle installs, although 7.62 NATO proved excellent because it hit dense vegetation.

The rifle was not suitable for jungle warfare. And an incomplete auto could not monitor. Also, its wood resources were vulnerable to jungle moisture swells, which affected nil.

DOD study showed that the general rifle was lower than the M1 Garand. Which it came as well as M16, which was soon would launch.

The M1 Garand

Perhaps the M1 Garand is the best-loved fighting rifle ever fought by the USA.

It was the epitome of a service rifle and developed by John Garand; powerful and reliable in any kind of hostile environment.

But it wasn’t flawless. And some of the armies in the Pacific started to seek a shorter version of the jungle struggle by the end of World War 2.

Who could blame them? Who could blame them? The Garand consider handy in the immediate vicinity with a 24-inch barrel. 

They needed an 18-inch variant of the Springfield M1A. Armorer made over 100 of them, as the story goes, in the Pacific. And some of whom sent to the USA for research and tests.

This weapon, the T26, never embraced and possibly never fought. The moniker “Tanker” had hung on somewhere down the way. While the initial meaning had nothing to do with tanks’ crews.

However, this was not a half-bad decision, and with the latest Springfield M1A Tanker, Springfield Armory pays homage to this endeavor.

Sure, the 7,62 M1A Magazine fed by Springfield M1A Tanker is not the 30-06 Garand fed by clips, but it has the same conception.

Springfield M1A, for which the company produces shortened Springfield M1A long. And is also responsive in its SOCOM range of M1A-based carbine length arms.

The M14 Rifle

While more focused on the M14/M1A, the magazine feeding mechanism, and chambering of a short cartridge were many changes: the 7.62×51 NATO.

I like the other SOCOMs, but the tanker with its militant walnut stock is more at my liking as a hidebound traditionalist.

However, it isn’t GI. Springfield M1A has been intelligent enough to cater to modern rifle shooters with certain user-friendly technology.

The stock equips with the M14 hinged Butt plate.

The military moved from the Springfield M1A to M14. And believed that the M1 Garand, M1 Carbine, Browning Automatic Rifle. Also, the M3 Submachine Gun replaces the last rifle.

As such, the M14 was a select-fire weapon, but few recorded as a handful of it in complete automobile mode.

However, it can have additional leverage in a full car when swinging the hinged Butt plate. And placing it above the shoulder.

When swung up, it also displays a vacuum box intended to hold cleaning kits and chemicals.

When the compartment opened on my sample, a non-marring tool required a little force.

The stock also has sling pivoting mounts at the top of the stock and out on the front end.

The one on the toe is attached; the one on the front end is steep and will probably lose from use.

I wish I would have used the rifle to have a conventional military sling, but a basic nylon web sling worked nice.

The security – which enters the trigger guard on Secure. The well-released paddle magazine. Also, the bolt lock on the left side, are other features common to the M1A fans.

You need to learn the trick of inserting the journal with an angle. Also, in the front of your lip until you rock it back into position; if you are not aware of this style. 

Characteristics

The front view is the chief of these. The tanker has an XS Sights post with a white strip and tritium insert instead of a boring old post.

And the 16.25-inch barrel also has the same size as the other SOCOMs, which has a portable muzzle.

It consists of two matches in 11- and one-clock location of 6/5/6 rows of small ports.

But unlike its fellow stables, mounting an optic is not easy.

Springfield makes an impressive mount, an aluminum mount of fourth-generation for $155 more; the top Tanker is not the Picatinny rail portion.

The rearview is T105E1 and the mine just required a slight reposition to reach a “mechanical zero,” as the sight body index mark oriented on the receiver’s index markers.

Do this by retaining the lifting button while the screw is on the winding button; so it would move freely.

Only press on the winding button to align it to the left or right.

The next procedure is to switch the front sight in its dovetail to compensate for the winding is a piece of confidence in this sight scheme.

A setscrew holds the front view, which requires a 7/64 Allen wrench. A single wrench is better than a multi-wrong folder or a bit in the driver’s pole because it doesn’t have much room.

You can find that shifting the 0.008-inch view of the impact point is one inch at 100 yards by reading the written material that comes with the Tanker.

But it’s a normal barrel for a Springfield M1A. According to my estimates, with the shorter Tanker barrel; you need to move a sight of 0.006 inches to move the party at 100 meters to the left or the right. 

How-to Instructions 

The noodle on the sample of Rupp was remarkably pleasant for a pistol, with a good picture. The Butt hinge plate was developing to provide a full-car M14 with enhanced power.

The lifting pushbutton operates at one- Minute of Angle. intervals with an unnumbered sign between each row labeled 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 11.

Run down to zero, come down and fire a party at zero range, eight or so clicks — 100 yards are common.

Adjust when required the elevation is where you want it, turn the elevation push button in the opposite direction and count clicks. 

When you get to the bottom of the yard, you know how many clicks you need to get zeroed. For other desired lengths, repeat if appropriate.

Sounds old-fashioned, but it does work. Competition shooters will wind down their M1A sights and dial up their regular M1A sights for the yard line — 200, 300, and 600.

If you want to use the numbered markers on the elevation button to indicate something — claim that the “2” is your 200 yards zero — dial in your 200 yards zero.

Drag and tighten the knob to the “2.”

The views of the Tanker are excellent, but my perspective doesn’t suit what it was, and it is unbelievably impossible for me to keep an exact six o’clock hold.

When my eyes were reasonably fine, I hadn’t won any Camp Perry awards more than three decades ago, and I certainly couldn’t.

Although the 50-yard 5-shot averages from the bank are not perfect, I had enough decent groups – less than 1,5 inches – to know that the rifle is much safer in hands than mine.

The rifle fired very well when I could reach the sweet spot in my bifocals and keep my targets constant.

Specs

The Tanker is a 16,25-inch short barrel with a white stripe and insert in tritium and has a bearing front blade.

The tanker is a big trigger for an off-the-rack M1A, especially given how old the design is.

In the first place, I am partial to two-stage causes, and the one on my sample broke at just 4.5 pounds decently.

I had no problems with the trigger at the bench, but where it shines is in shooting position. At 100 yards I burnt, prone, sitting, and kneeling, about 100 rounds of offhand. 

Shots broke cleanly and at 100 yards, I was able to fire grapefruit groups from prone and volleyball groups.

Instead of taking a center mass at six a.m., I find sights a lot easier to use.

You would imagine it was a handful of a short 308 like this. 

If you shot the tanker without any hearing aid ports that do a wonderful job of taming reboxing will seriously box your face.

If you fire in a covered range, you might even try doubling (stops under muffs).

But the gun is not only controllable but relaxing when firing on the ground.

The pistol came back easily and from the standing – the most sensitive place for recoiling powers.

It’s partly because of its weight. The weapon still weighs almost nine pounds, despite the shorter barrel.

At first, the M14/M1A was a heavy weapon, which is a major explanation why the U.S. military sought a replacement in Vietnam’s earliest days.

Past, features, and guidance

You can adjust the rearview in full. The height changes are one Minute of Angle, and the numbers on the button index match those lengths.

Pull the handle back to detach the running rod before the guiding lug is in line with that in the guide, and then pull it out and up.

It is complicated, so it is one of the deals where you first try it; as you will fight and wonder if you do it well, the part pops out abruptly.

Take the bolt out into the chamber, and pull it slightly.

I do not recommend you carry out further disassembly. Mounting is simple, although I struggled with replacing the operating rod at the beginning.

The trick is that you want the rod to go in a little bit to the rod guide, then place the optical rod jump over the roller, and that is all together.

As I said, you will see this machine as solid, and the petrol tanker was as confident as any M1A I ever shot.

I blended multiple loads from the 123 Grain Lapuas to the Winchesters, which range from 168 Grains, and shot it as easy as I can in a 10-round Parkerized.

This was the case during accuracy testing and position shot. There were no problems.

The element with a good number on the back is the stock in that particular sample.

Oil is producing using a conventional army rifle.
