The process of cigar making is very simple and consists of three steps: Filling, Connecting and Wrapping. For the second filling, we use big tobacco leaves. After the cigar finished and gets its recognized shape, there are two primary parts of it: the Head (that goes into the mouth) and the Foot (the part which is lit on fire).

So what is the meaning of stogie then? Well, the part about the long, roll cigar is true, but the meaning of stogie is much more than that. It is thicker and can produce a larger amount of smoke than regular cigar, which makes it ideal for cold weather because it’s thicker and hot smoke will warm you up. Moreover, it has a mild and delicious aroma and lasts much longer than regular cigars.

Stogie is usually handcraft and quality tobacco usually need to make high-quality the meaning of stogie. Tobacco found in different forms such as leaves, some sort of chewing substance, or dust. History of the meaning of Stogie

There are many speculations on the origin of the term Stogie. It is assume that the term was first used in the early 19th century in North America when covered wagons were traveling across the whole country and discovering the new frontier.

These traveling wagons were generally called “Conestoga wagons” because they were usually constructed near Conestoga, Pennsylvania. Later, when the popularity of these wagons grew up, their names became associated with characteristics of the drivers just as much as the wagons themselves.

Firstly, in the time of gold-rush, when the numbers of these wagons drastically increased, the word Stogie was referred to thick and long-lasting shoes that were worn by the drivers of these wagons. However, when the popularity of these wagons dropped and their activities were slowing down, the word Stogie began to be associated with thin and cheap cigars that were smoked by the drivers and the connection to shoes fell into oblivion and remained only with real lovers of cigars.

How to serve Stogie?

Stogie is not an ordinary cigar, so everything that has to do with them needs to be done in a special way.

At first, the top of the cigar is cut by 2mm to free up space for airflow during each inhalation (Learn more about properly cutting stogies in this article). They are to be lit with matches, candles, or gas igniters (it is not recommended to use a petrol igniter) to keep the good taste and aroma.

 If you are lighting it up with matches, you will first need to wait for the sediments of sulfur to get burn and then light up the cigar. Never put your cigar directly into the flame, instead slightly approach it above the flame and wait for it to get light up. This needs to done under the angle to let the black thin ring form around the cigar.

When you light it up, you will not approach the cigar immediately to your mouth, instead wait for few seconds to light up everything and then start smoking.

After every inhalation, repeat the process.

How to store the Meaning of Stogie?

Like every cigar, Stogie also needs to store in Humidor in order to not lose its moisture and also keep the good taste and aroma.

The best way to store it is to use Humidors that are made from Spanish cedar because conditions in them will allow the Stogie to stay moisturized and improve the process of ripening as well.

The ideal level of humidity is about 68%-72% and the optimal temperature is about 18-22 degrees Celsius.

Famous Brands

Stogie can be find in three different shapes: Round, Pyramidal, and Torpedo.

Also, there are many different brands on the market and the most famous ones are Bolivar, Cohiba, Romeo Y Julieta, Hoyo De Monterey,  H.Upmann,  Montecristo, Trinidad, and Davidoff.

This brand found by José F. Rocha around 1901 and 1902. It known for its strong taste and good reputation (Like the leader from which they got their name, who was a strong and powerful person in Venezuelan History) and is very popular among traditional smokers.

 Its flavor is very recognizable and can be found in different aromas like the fruit one and also with picante tastes.

 A very long time needed to make these cigars; they stay in molds and dry in there for 5 to 10 years. Due to their strong taste and thick smoke, they not recommended for beginners.

It is enjoying the reputation of the most famous brand since it was launch on the market in 1982.

Its tobacco is fermented three times and the tobacco leaves stay in barrels made from cedar with a minimum time of 3 years, but it is not recommended to use them till 5-7 years have passed.

With such a long process of making, they are sure to be quality cigars with good taste.

It is the most expensive brand and was the favorite of the Cuban leader Fidel Castro.

The Romeo Y Julieta was established in 1875 by Inocencio Alvarez and Manin García. The brand got its name from Spanish translation of Shakespeare’s famous tragedy, Romeo and Juliet.

Between 1885 and 1900, the brand won several awards at different tasting competitions, which is evident from the gold medals on the brand’s logo.

 It can have different aromas and the most common ones are floral, hazelnut, herbal, fruit, cacao, and coffee… It needs “relative short time” of ripening to reach its aromas that is between 3 to 5 years.

Sir Winston Churchill was probably one of the most famous fans of this brand. As a matter of fact, one of the cigars was name in his honor; it is a long 7 by 47 ring gauge cigar known as the Churchill.

In 1865, Don José Gener y Batet registered his own line of cigar and called it-Hoyo De Monterrey.

 It is characterize by its sweet taste and tobacco and its combination of creamy, sweet, and mild aroma.

 The time needed for the process of ripening is very short, only about 15-20 years (of course this is joke. That is a huge amount of time.)

H.Upmann is one of the oldest brands among the cigars. It was establish by German banker Hermann Dietrich Upmann who purchased a local cigar factory at 85 San Miguel Street, Havana, and started producing cigars under the H. Upmann brand in 1844. 

The fact that they were favorite cigars of American president John F. Kennedy tells a lot about its quality. 

The experts say that they are best after 10-15 years of aging.

Considered as cigars of very fine taste, Montecristo is one of the most popular cigar brands today.

It was founded by Alonso Menéndez who purchase the factory in 1935 and immediately starts production of a new brand of cigars under the name Montecristo.

Its aroma fruity sweet with a combination of cacao, coffee and vanilla and all of this is mix with middle strengthen tobacco.

 It should not be aged more than 5-6 years; otherwise it will significantly lose its aroma.

According to the words of a former executive of Habanos S.A, Adriano Martinez, the Trinidad brand was first established in 1969 at El Laguito factory in Havana. Since they produced in the same factory as the Cohiba brand, they both look very identical.

 Trinidad has developed a very noble flavor because of the third fermentation which gives them a classic Cuban taste.

 There were some rumors that former Cuban President Fidel Castro liked them more than Cohiba brand, but he denied that in his autobiography, “My life”.

These are cigars with a full taste of earth, cedar, and sandalwood and with a rich and expressive aroma.

In 2004, the Brand was expanding with 3 new styles and all of them were thicker than “Fundadores”. Those styles are: Trinidad Robustos Extra, Coloniales, and Trinidad Reyes.

And finally our latest, but not less important brand-Davidoff.

After the Second World War, Zino Davidoff decides to start production of a new line of cigars. In 1968, the first series of Cigars name “Davidoff” was release.

One of their main characteristic is that they have high quality criteria.

Tobacco leaves left to mature for up to 4 years before starting any production.

When everything is ready, they are chose among different harvests to achieve harmony of aromas.
